Since Addison turned one, two and a half weeks ago, I have probably said, "I can't believe its been a year" or some variation of that phrase about a hundred times. Our little baby girl is becoming a toddler before our eyes (a sassy one at that!) and I must say that I am excited, sad and thankful all at once. I am excited to see Addison continue to grow before our eyes; sad that the time with our "baby" is passing so quickly and thankful for our every minute we have with our sweet little girl and the joy she has brought to our lives. Addison is still a cuddly, loving baby (excuse me, TODDLER) who loves to play, but she is quickly learning how to push boundaries, as evidenced by the conversation I had with her pediatrician at her one year check up about discipline! (For the record, you can in fact start time outs with one year olds... we haven't done one yet, but I don't think its too far off...)
Official stats at one year (9/26/13 -- yes we are mean parents and took Addison to the doctor - shots included - on her actual birthday):
- Height: 29.5 inches (75th percentile)
- Weight: 21.2 oz (68th percentile) - Bob, once again, guessed this dead on!
- Head circumference: 47 cm (92nd percentile)
Addison is moving up in her percentiles especially in height (from the average 50 percentile or so that she has been for height and weight at recent check ups). Maybe our little girl really will get the Kehrli height?!?!? Only time will tell...
In terms of movement and other milestones, Addison is getting stronger by the day! She is much more comfortable standing (with support) and shuffles along the walls, table, etc. going from one object to the next. She is not walking yet, but we are definitely getting close! She loves to push her toys around and practice her walking.
Addison also has a new found obsession with all things musical. We let her play with two painted maracas that we received as part of ABaal and Blake's wedding invite several years ago and they quickly became her favorite toy. We have had to limit play time with them, however, since she started to chew on them and we are pretty sure that the artists in Mexico still aren't sure what lead-free paint is ;) We ordered another set of plastic maracas (more like little kid party favors), and she is now obsessed with those too. We have maracas in her room, in the car, in the living room, in the basement, in her diaper bag - pretty much anywhere she goes. Good thing they were only $5 for a massive set!!!
When I drop Addison off at school in the morning, music is always on in the background and I think Addison is really loving it! She and her friends at school (Eloise in particular) dance throughout the day, especially when the music teachers come (they have Teacher Betsy come for sign language, Spanish and singing on Tuesdays, followed by folk musicians Bonnie and Bruce on Wednesdays).
Addison is also a lover of food! For a while now, we have been saying she is a full-flavor gal, but that is becoming even more obvious as the days go on. She tries everything at school(bean and cheese burritos with pico de gallo, hummus, etc.) and also at home. Not too long ago she tried spaghetti noodles for the first time. We had done smaller noodles before - macaroni, penne, etc. - but hadn't tried long spaghetti noodles yet. The result was hilarious! Addison would put part of the noodle in her mouth and then suck the rest of it in and then pull it back out. This went on for a minute or so before she decided the noodles were worth eating!
We have also learned that Addison is a big fan of doing things herself. I thought we had a little while longer before this became the norm, but alas, Addison didn't agree. She would much rather feed herself than be fed, which made us believe we might be done with the squeeze pouch baby food until we let her eat one on her own! It was a HUGE hit and now she finishes just about every dinner with a squeeze pouch.
The little miss has also become a huge fan of pointing...(At everything!) When she points, we narrate so life has become a lot more interesting. From trees to light posts and airplanes to animals, we talk about it all and Addison loves to listen!
The last couple of weeks have also brought some less than ideal behaviors. Lots of throwing things on the floor, shoving Cheerios off her tray, hitting, grabbing and hair pulling. I watched Addison playing with her friend Sydney (sweet, gentle, nice Sydney) and realized we had one stubborn and opinionated little girl on our hands!
This month also brought our first "incident reports" at school. Clearly Addison is becoming more active and pushing her physical limits. She is also testing her teacher's limits by not being as gentle as she should be with the babies in her class. I have to say that I was pretty sad the day that I learned some other kid went home with an incident report because of Addison :( Just a little scratch on another baby, but still, not what you want to hear!

Bob and I decided months ago that we would start a new tradition by taking Addison's birthday off from work to make our own little holiday, completely focused on spending time with our girl. After a nice sleep in, we started the day off with a visit to the doctor for a one year check-up and a handful of shots. Addison was a trooper and the doctor was thrilled to see her on her special day!

We knew that Addison would have been an utter disaster without a nap so after her appointment we headed home for her to rest. While she napped, Bob assembled her birthday gift and I got a bit more organized for her birthday party.

Once Addison woke up, we made our way to one of our favorite places - the zoo! In early August, Addison fed a very pregnant Giraffe named Olivia with Mama K, Aunt Lauren, Baby Jude, Tamara and Rosie. On our birthday trip to the zoo, we got to see Olivia's baby (who had yet to be named). He was already over 6 feet tall! Our zoo has had a baby BOOM this year so we also saw the lion cubs (who are VERY big now) and jaguar cubs this go around.

Addison was also given a token for a birthday carousel ride - her first! Even more amazing than the ride itself was learning the carousel at Woodland Park Zoo was moved to Seattle in the early '90s from an amusement park in Santa Clara, CA... Great America perhaps?!?!?
After the zoo, we came home and Addison opened presents - testing a few out along the way. We had a nice relaxing dinner at home, saving the cake extravaganza for Addison's birthday party on Sept. 28th (more to come on that later in my next post!)
